Chapter 17

Matt noticed Melina’s concern as he entered the Hoffman Close Medical Practice at twenty past nine, but managed to make it all the way to the door of his office before she intervened.

“Is everything okay, Matthew?” Her voice was hushed as she hurried up beside him, her demure floral dress swishing around her. “It’s not like you to be late.”

“Everything’s fine, Melina. My coffee date with a friend ran longer than expected, that’s all.”

Matt had taken his time with Seeley, drawing every sliver of information he could from her on how best to win Erica over. Although he’d deciphered the gist behind her riddle of advice, he hadn’t felt content. He had needed specifics, and, even more than that, he’d needed reassurance.

What Matt had learned from Seeley had given him hope. Erica cared about him. Seeley was convinced her friend was, in the very least, harboring an avid crush on him, and that had boosted his confidence in a major way. Now all he had to do was put some plans in place to secure more than just her lust. He wanted all of her in his life, not only her body but her heart and soul, as well.

“Date?” Melina’s tone rose an octave.

Matt slumped as he realized his mistake.

“Don’t get too excited, Melina,” Nate said as he appeared beside them. “He was only meeting up with Seeley.”

Matt shot his friend a glare as Melina’s hopeful smile faltered.

“Seeley? I thought you were seeing Erica? That’s what Jocelyn told me.”

Matt gritted his teeth tightly and shook his head. Thanks to Nate every woman in town would hear a similar version of his buddy’s claim before the end of the day.

“Erica’s such a nice girl,” Melina continued, “but that Seeley can be wild. You know, Mrs. Marx told me she set her last boyfriend’s clothes on fire. Just threw them in the gutter and lit up a match.” She put her hands on her hips and tsked.

“It was a friendly catch-up, Melina.” Matt smiled, touching her shoulder reassuringly. “Only a chat. No clothes were set on fire.”

When she eyed him with skepticism, Matt glowered at Nate.

“And, where were you? What happened to tie shopping?”

Nate’s sly smirk spoke volumes. “I got bored and then ran into Chloe.”

Matt noticed Melina’s lips purse, but before she could add her two cents’ worth, he pointed back to the waiting room. The half-dozen nosy townspeople seated in that space immediately looked away, their gazes shifting back to their spouses, the magazines supplied, or even the ceiling. One older gentleman in a tartan beret actually began to whistle.

Melina sighed loudly as she turned away, but after a few steps, she faced them again and clicked her fingers. “Matthew, a delivery came for you before we opened. It was left on the front step. I’ve put it on your desk. I hope that’s all right.”

“Thanks, Melina.”

Her expression warmed as she waggled her fingers at them, and then retreated.

When Matt met Nate’s cheerful expression, he scowled at him. “Thanks a lot, buddy.
